MEMBERS TALK
Comments from members on what is expected of an art gallery:
1) I
would like to be treated respectfully - not
like a petitioner, like an applicant.
2) They should appreciate my artworks - not
my money!
Bruce Rimell
(United Kingdom):
1)
Enthusiasm for my work, an ability to find
the right audience for my work, open and
honest dealings.
2) An understanding that by representing me,
the gallery is acting as my partner, not my
manager, publicist, exclusive licencee or my
boss.
Krisztina Asztalos
(Hungary):
1)
treated me and my art respectfully due to my
merits and education in art and in
profession
2) gallerist having a reliable, strong
professional and cultural background in
art,working with fair dealers
I believe if a gallerist lives from the
artist talent and artworks, shall respect
artist as a source of his/her living, not
fortunate when roles are exchanged.
Katerina Xarchopoulou
(Greece):
1. Act professionally in
marketing the work to the right target group
with imagination and creativity.
2. Think of me as a business
associate, not a beggar.
Martin Bonnici
(Australia):
I
think my views work in conjunction with the
above mentioned!
1. Gallery staff that "want" to be there and
actually care about my work.
2. A gallery that is laterally proactive and
will actually do what they say.
Emmy Verschoor
(Netherlands):
1. Enthusiastic and
respectful partnership.
2. An eye for art and
commercial aspects.
Chat Ko (USA):
I
will try to keep this short.
1. After I shut down my own NYC gallery,
named Edification, 20 years ago, the only
kind of gallery I would show in belongs to a
university. There are a few of this kind
that belong to museums and big institutions.
2. For me, education of art comes first. Art
is not about me.
3. I reject galleries and their operators
who know not what art and the art market is.
4. I refuse to support any gallery's agendas
which are out there just for the money, not
genuine to humanity and humane 'basic'
values.
5. The gallery and its operators must be
able to actualize the reason of art and its
applications. The gallery's function is like
that of a church, a temple to the people
(not about religion), just not as big as a
museum. If a work of art is all about how
much it is sold for, we've all missed the
point.
6. I do believe artists too are people.
Artists, especially the good ones, are
deserving of the extra pay. Therefore the
purpose of an art gallery is to serve the
artists and its patrons for that exact
function in a capitalistic society.
There is a lot more I want to say but I
don't think the gallery I want exists. After
all I shut down mine twenty years ago.
Roberta Masciarelli
(Italy):
I
search for
1 - a partnership
2- same frequency
Vaun Cornell (South
Africa):
vision, integrity, openness -
