Kasia Banas

Kasia Banas

Born in 1973 in Poland. Studied painting, graphic art and sculpture in the Academy of Fine Arts in Wroclaw. In 1997 graduated from Jozef Halas’ studio in painting. A member of the Union of Polish Artists and Designers and the Polish Pastellists Association. Works in painting and graphic design.

In her works Kasia Banas is trying to solve the eternal and fundamental problems of painting: to find the
equilibrium of matter, harmony of colours and proportion of masses. In order to avoid slipping into chaos, the artist constantly confronts her experiences with nature and explores its abundance to find not only inspiration, but also an inner logic and order. The iconic elements of her paintings represent pure forms, lines, rhythms and colours which, however, clearly allude to real objects such as e.g. a ship, a river bank or a mouth of a port. Kasia Banas experiments with colours to find their individual characteristics, which is expressed by how she handles the paint, manages the textural nuances and colour combinations. The young artist cherishes purely pictorial values, but in the name of good technique she consciously abandons the now ubiquitous “out of focus” textures, which are often artistically unjustified. On the one hand, the surface of her paintings is smooth and free from unnecessary thickenings or the tracks of the spatula, but on the other hand, it is very complicated and diverse. This is a result of her experimental search within the colour range. The final product, characterised by sophisticated colour effects, is rendered by glazing and scumbling, colours showing through other colours, scratches and very subtle impastos. Each painting is an attempt to yet again solve artistic problems, in a manner which is not schematic, but fresh, yet revealing a uniform trend in this artistic quest.

The landscapes by Banas, although inspired by existing places do not merely mimic reality. Instead, they prove that the artist is sensitive to the beauty of form and colour inherent in nature and presents it in a transformed and synthesised manner. The compositions are predominated by horizontal lines which reflect those one can see in landscapes. These horizontal stripes of colour provide an arrangement for the rather unsystematic areas of colour and horizontal rhythms. The entire composition is, however, free from the strict discipline of geometrical abstraction. Derived from a real landscape, the compositions lose nothing of the independence and poetry of the real motif. The artist likes travelling, but when she does so she observes the local vistas through her own experience and combines them with the achievements of Polish colourists. This kind of attitude protects the artist from a slavish pursuit of vogue. After all, she loves what she is doing now and avoids making changes without a strong inner motivation. Maybe it is owing to such an honest attitude that the works of Kasia Banas are full of youthful and sincere joie de vivre et création.
